Sherman, a general that served from 1861-1865, was ordered to march south while Grant took on Richmond.Sherman chased the confederate army and wiped out anything in his path. 100,000 troops took Atlanta and burned it down. Sherman continued on toward Savannah on the coast of the Atlantic and turned north into South Carolina and North Carolina and it was another victory for the north. It was the last blow to the south.

Robert E. Lee sent his army north to invade the north and all roads lead right to Gettysburg. On the first day army's collided in the north and the west of the town in the hook formation that the Confederates had them trapped in. John Buford held off the Confederate troop until reinforcements arrived to back up the army. Unfortunately the confederates also got more troops and had the Union retreat back to Cemetery Hill and Culps hill.
On the second day 90,000 soldiers Confederate troops essentially wrapped around the Unions, with 70,000 soldiers, position . Lee launched a heavy assault on the left Union army, and fighting at Devil's Den, Little Round Top, the wheat field, the peach orchard, and Cemetery Ridge. On Union right, fighting escalated on Culp's Hill and Cemetery Hill.even though the Confederates got ground, the Union still held positions by the end of the day.
On the third day, July 3rd, fighting continued on Culp's Hill, and cavalry battles to the east and south, but the main event was a infantry assault by 12,000 Confederates against the middle of the Union army on Cemetery Ridge (Pickett's Charge). The charge was pushed back by Union rifle fire, and many losses to the Confederate army. Lee led his army on a retreat back to Virginia. 51,000 soldiers from both armies were killed, wounded, captured or missing in the three-day battle. Four months after the battle, President Lincoln used the dedication ceremony for Gettysburg's Soldiers National Cemetery to honor the fallen Union soldiers and explained the purpose of the war in his historic Gettysburg Address.
"The war...was an unnecessary condition of affairs, and might have been avoided if forebearance and wisdom had been practiced on both sides." -Robert E. Lee
